The Stirling Maxwell collection consists of 2,000 volumes which had been in the library of Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878), collector of books, paintings, engravings, silver and ceramics. Sir William was the son of Archibald Stirling (1768-1847) who was a planter and slave owner in Jamaica. The 2,000 books in this collection include Sir William’s important collection of emblem literature, which he assembled over a period of forty years using his inherited family wealth.
