This flash-talk centres on the implementation of a workshop aimed to introduce and explore decolonisation in the context of Biological Sciences research. The workshop, presented by Lara Lalemi (DecolonisingAcadmia.org.uk) and developed collaboratively between Lara and staff in the University of Bristol Biological Sciences department, introduced first year undergraduate students to concepts surrounding coloniality, decoloniality, positionality alongside highlighting key areas in biological sciences where the effects of coloniality are more apparent. This flash talk will highlight feedback about what worked and what didn't to well-equip others developing similar teaching activities.
1. How can the concepts of coloniality, decoloniality be explored in STEM subjects?
2. What are key areas in STEM research where the effects of coloniality are more apparent?
3. How do we communicate the importance of decolonisation to students?
